What others say

Read on about students' experiences with receiving academic support at The Scholar Guide.

Being coached by Mieke was a wonderful experience. With my bachelor thesis, I got stuck. A thesis where I had to choose between topics I didn’t relate to. A mentor with whom there was no match. And I lacked the proper skills to deal with it. It felt as if I was about to fail right in front of the finish.
First of all: Mieke understands science, how the scientific world works, thinks and what they want to see. In a very practical way she can chop this thesis that felt like too big to handle, in little pieces, that were not only easy to chew on, I even got to like the taste of it. Her English is fluent (of course) but she reads Dutch very well too. (My thesis was in Dutch). The fact that I live in the Netherlands and she in South-Africa, so we had to work online, was no problem.
As a person she is amazing. Kind, a sharp mind, motivating, supportive. She knows to create a context where you start believing in yourself again, as I had lost hope. I’m proud to say that I made it to the finish.
I am aiming for a master now. And yes, when it’s time for my thesis I will definitely ask Mieke again. In life, there are good teachers and lesser ones. Mieke is a good one. It would have saved me a lot of time and insecurity if I had heard of her before.
I will gladly recommend Mieke to anyone.
